Drink Without Dread: Gluten-Reduced Beer

With more and more beer lovers looking for ways to care for health and well-being (without selling their soul) it seems only fitting for us here at Hawkers to ensure our ever-inclusive brewery is catering to everyone! Our latest mission: gluten intolerance. If an aversion to gluten has got you down and missing out on one of your favourite hobbies (drinking beer)? Never fear, Hawkers gluten-reduced beers are here.

We’re pleased, if not downright elated, to confirm that 4 of our most popular brews meet the Australian standards for a ‘gluten-reduced’ beer. So, you can sip on our Pilsner, Pale Ale, West Coast IPA and ROVER Gilbert Rd Lager with peace of mind… and a happy digestive system.

Gluten-reduced beer (not to be confused with gluten-free beer) is beer that has had the gluten content reduced to below 20 parts per million (ppm). Although official gluten testing results of Hawkers Pilsner, Pale Ale, West Coast IPA and Rover Gilbert Rd Lager show practically undetectable gluten content, beers are inherently made using raw materials containing gluten and therefore cannot be officially classified as ‘gluten free’... although they’re darn near close!

Gluten-reduced beer is made using the same basic ingredients as regular beer: malted barley, hops, and water. However, an enzyme called Brewers Clarex™ is added to the brewing process. This enzyme breaks down the gluten molecules into smaller pieces, reducing the gluten content of the beer without impacting the overall flavour or aroma, resulting in an extremely low gluten beer.

Many people with celiac disease have reported that they can tolerate gluten-reduced beer without any problems. It is important to note that individual tolerance levels may vary, so it is always best to talk to your doctor before trying gluten-reduced beer.

If a gluten-intolerance has been holding you back from sipping on your favourite froths, then our low gluten beers; Hawkers Pilsner, Pale Ale, West Coast IPA and Rover Gilbert Rd Lager could put an end to that! Just remember to start with a small amount first to see how you tolerate it.
