WHAT IS GLUTEN REDUCED BEER?
Gluten-reduced beer (not to be confused with gluten-free beer) is beer that has had the gluten content reduced to below 20 parts per million (ppm). Although official gluten testing results of Hawkers Pilsner, Pale Ale, West Coast IPA and Rover Gilbert Rd Lager show practically undetectable gluten content, beers are inherently made using raw materials containing gluten and therefore cannot be officially classified as ‘gluten free’... although they’re darn near close!
HOW WE BREW GLUTEN-REDUCED BEERS
Gluten-reduced beer is made using the same basic ingredients as regular beer: malted barley, hops, and water. However, an enzyme called Brewers Clarex™ is added to the brewing process. This enzyme breaks down the gluten molecules into smaller pieces, reducing the gluten content of the beer without impacting the overall flavour or aroma, resulting in an extremely low gluten beer.
IS GLUTEN-REDUCED BEER SAFE FOR PEOPLE WITH CELIAC DISEASE?
Many people with celiac disease have reported that they can tolerate gluten-reduced beer without any problems. It is important to note that individual tolerance levels may vary, so it is always best to talk to your doctor before trying gluten-reduced beer.
